Overview
If you don't know, Huel is a meal replacement shake which advertises itself as a "convenient way to get all the daily nutrients you need". You can read more about it here.
I've tried Huel, and similar products, multiple times at various points in my life but never stuck with them for more than a couple of weeks. Around November 2025, however, due to my partners diagnosis which meant that they really had to start watching what they eat, I've decided to really give Huel a go and base my diet around it so that they can focus on their diet. As such, for the last few months my daily diet has consisted of at least 80% Huel, with the other 20% either also being Huel or something that my partner and I could enjoy together.
On a day where I only have Huel, I would usually have 4-5 shakes of the Black Edition and 1 Hot & Savoury Meal Pack. The reason for choosing the Black edition is because of the 17:40:40:3 macro split (carbs, fat, protein, fibre). As someone who is quite active (weightlifting, hiking, conditioning), I really like this split for its ability to provide me with plenty of energy to do all these things and plenty of protein for building muscle - all of this in a very convenient package.
Pros
Convenience is the biggest pro by far. Powder meals only take a couple of minutes to prepare (that's including cleaning) the bottle and the scoop), and hot and savoury meals only take up to 10 (depending on how quick your kettle is). I also tend to take a few scoops of powder with me in a container on hikes and make myself a powder meal while I'm out. If I'm in a hurry to leave the house, I also sometimes prepare a hot and savoury meal in a thermos and take that with me.
In terms of improvements in gym performance, I have noticed that I am nowhere near as sore the day after gym - usually I'm not sore at all, but if I am it would only be in the morning. My injury recovery has also improved massively - a pulled muscle will fully heal within a day or two while still actively using it. Progress in weightlifting has also sped up, which is probably due to my increased protein intake improving my recovery.
Some other things I have noticed is that I have far more energy throughout the day, my skin has improved massively, and my mood in general is far better.
Cons
Other than very smelly farts and doing more number 2s, I have not experienced any cons.
Flavours
I have tried most flavours of the Black Edition powder and the Hot & Savoury meals, so here is what I think of them. It's worth pointing out that all Black Edition powders share a sort of oaty taste.
Black Edition Powder:
- Chocolate - very sickly. The first few times I had it, I started getting a really bad headache ~30 minutes after. From what I can tell, that's due to the sweetener/flavourings they use. Eventually, I stopped having them. Won't be ordering any more of it.
- Vanilla - It's okay, not a great a fan. Apparently its good for adding your own stuff to. Will order occasionally.
- Banana - It's good. Not much to say, just decent flavour. Will order regularly.
- Strawberries & Cream - One of my favourites. Will order regularly
- Salted Caramel -
- Coffee Caramel - Never ordered it since I like drinking coffee too much.
- Cinnamon Swirl - Very good, reminds of the cinnamon cereal I had as a kid. Will order regularly.
- Cookies & Cream - Quite sickly, but not as bad as chocolate. Can tell there is something in there that is supposed to taste like cream, but it really doesn't. Will not be ordering again.
- Unflavoured & Unsweetend - Another one of my favourites. Has an earthy and nutty flavour. Regularly makes 50% of my powder order.
Hot & Savoury Meals:
- Katsu Curry Noodles, Korean BBQ Noodles, and Hoisin Duck Noodles - Honestly, I can't tell much of a difference between them. They're all right on the border of being too sweet for me. Might order occasionally.
- Mexican Chilli - Very pleasant. A tiny bit of spice. Will order regularly.
- Fiery Chick'n Noodles - A bit too spicy for me to enjoy. Will not order again.
- Mac & Cheese - My favourite. Very cheesy. Will order regularly.
